The Green Hornet

Ellen and I went to watch The Green Hornet today. We were both upset at the fact that this film is only showing in 3D, because we had a hunch that the 3D, in this case, is just a money-making scheme. It turns out we were right, but more on that later. Since I had my glasses on that day, it was somewhat difficult to fit the 3D glasses on my head, but I got it on, anyways. These glasses were different from the ones that I was used to in AMC and Century Theatres. They were heavier. So between my own glasses and the 3D glasses, they made my ears hurt a little from the extra weight.

The movie was pretty action-packed, and Jay Chou spoke more lines than I thought he would. Since he didn’t speak English, I thought they might keep his lines to a minimum. Jay Chou played Kato, and in the movie, everything he designed was written in Chinese (including the super-awesome coffee-maker and the Black Beauty). It led to some funny situations when Britt Reid couldn’t figure out which switches to flip in the Black Beauty. Cameron Diaz was her usual self as Lenore, as well as Seth Rogan, who played Britt, a.k.a., The Green Hornet. I guess there couldn’t be too much chemistry between Jay Chou and Seth Rogan because Jay Chou didn’t speak English fluently, so basically Seth Rogan had to carry a large portion of the movie, and it just gets tiring eventually, especially since he co-wrote the screenplay. I think Kevin Smith should have wrote the screenplay instead of declining it. It was just too much Seth Rogan.

The movie employed a pretty stylish technique for the movie, showing the bad guys in different colors and stretching the reality around the people as they fought. Although I thought that was a little too much, it kind of worked for this movie since it was based on a comic. An effect that didn’t work was the 3D effect. It was so underutilized for this movie that it basically amounted to a ripoff. In fact, the most memorable scene with 3D effects was the credits, where it was folded in the middle like a pamphlet. That was hardly worth the 3D price. I also thought the ending was a bit lacking. The ending was that Britt didn’t get the DA’s confessions of his crimes. I get that Seth Rogan is trying to show that Britt is such a screw-up that he couldn’t even get the recording into the sushi usb flash drive correctly, but that just seemed like an extra joke that didn’t need to be there. I mean, in the end, they had to honor the DA’s death, since the truth couldn’t get out. Overall, this movie is worth a watch, but most likely a rental, since the 3D glasses are just a gimmick.
